Actually we would say before the Internet Society became public. This was a time in the early 90s and before. Basically, because of what was just mentioned, Google or other search engines were not around to help you, if you wanted to do research. In general, you need to have these sets of books in your collection. My Digital Host, David, and I remember these humongous volumes on his own bookshelves as well.
